Veterans invited to seminar on VA death benefits

News-Herald - 7/5/2022

Jul. 5—An upcoming seminar in Perry Township will provide military veterans with information about death benefits that are available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The event begins at 6 p.m., Aug. 24, in the Perry Township Community Center, at 2800 Perry Park Road.

Perry American Legion Post 697 will host the seminar, which is free of charge to veterans from anywhere in the region. Attendance is limited, so veterans should RSVP at the community center by either visiting the site or calling 440-259-3772.

"Veterans will learn more about their benefits, but most importantly, the family will find out what they need to do upon the veteran's passing," said Tom Anderson, the post's commander.

In fact, Anderson said veterans are strongly encouraged to attend the seminar with their spouse and/or other family members who eventually might make funeral arrangements for the veteran.

Topics to be covered during the program will include VA death benefits such as military honors at a funeral; burial allowances; and gravesite military headstone and marker options.

Along with Anderson, featured speakers at the seminar will include a local funeral director and a veterans service officer from the Lake County Veterans Service Commission.

Each veteran also will receive a packet stocked with brochures, contact information and all the forms the family will need to submit when a veteran dies.

Perry American Legion Post 697 conducted its first seminar on VA death benefits at the Perry Community Center on May 18.

"The seminar was well-received and several families are taking steps to make certain things are in place for the day their veteran passes," Anderson said.
