Parade, ceremonies to salute veterans in Aurora area

Nov. 8—A number of events will be held Thursday to honor Veterans Day in the Aurora area.

The annual Aurora Veterans Day Parade, with the theme "Serving Our Country and Our Community," will begin at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at Benton Street and Broadway downtown.

The parade will then head north on Broadway to Downer Place and west on Downer to the GAR Memorial Hall, 23 E. Downer Place, where veterans, parade participants and guests will convene for a tribute ceremony.

The Veterans Day ceremony will feature remarks by Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin, a U.S. Army veteran, and other local veterans; a roll call of military branches; and a military salute on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month to commemorate the armistice agreement that ended World War I.

Leading this year's parade as grand marshals will be a unit of women veterans.

Waubonsee Community College will host a Veterans Day observance at 11 a.m. at the Academic and Professional Center at its Sugar Grove campus on Thursday.

The event will feature remarks by Jeffrey Gregor, dean for Health Professions and Public Service at Waubonsee. The event will also feature a presentation of colors by members of the West Aurora High School Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps, as well as patriotic music selections by faculty.

Immediately following the program, all veterans at the event will be invited to participate in a group photo.

The annual St. Charles Veterans Day ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Fire Station 1, 112 N. Riverside Ave. in St. Charles.

The ceremony will begin with the national anthem, followed by a prayer, remarks, a closing prayer, gun salute and taps performance.

In Yorkville, the 2021 Yorkville Flags of Valor are currently up at Town Square, 301 N. Bridge St., and will remain on display through Veterans Day.

The village of North Aurora will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Thursday at the North Aurora Veterans Memorial at Willow Way and Farview Drive.

Oswego's Little White School Museum will open its annual "Remembering our Veterans" special exhibit on Thursday at the museum, 72 Polk St. in Oswego.

The exhibit will continue through Sunday, Nov. 28. Public exhibit hours will be Monday, Thursday and Friday, 1 to 5:30 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The museum is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
