Sun Journal - 12/22/2020
Dec. 22—George E. Halyak, is this year's awardee of Craven County Veterans' Council's Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was presented on Monday, Dec. 14 at the VFW 2514 Hall before the Council, and Craven County's veterans' services organizations.
Halyak, is a US Navy Veteran of the Vietnam War and an active member of Craven County's veterans service and community organizations. He has been directly or indirectly involved with Veteran activities for over four decades. His record of accomplishments since moving to Craven County 20 years ago run the gamut of being a member of Friends Helping Friends, helping establish American Legion Post 539, and most recently assuming the chairmanship of the Vietnam Wall Committee.
Halyak was recognized in May of 2020 as one of Craven County's 52 Faces by the Sun Journal, CarolinaEast Medical Center and their partnership with the New Bern Chamber of Commerce. His recognition as one of the 52 faces is due in large part to his generosity, community spirit, and lifelong commitment to veterans' activities. He was also recognized for his efforts to bring the Vietnam Wall to New Bern. This effort to organize, raise the funds for, and get community involvement behind bringing this replica of the Wall to New Bern is a saga in and of itself. The organization, committees, and materials produced for the Wall visitors have become a benchmark for the Vietnam Wall Memorial Foundation. Due to his unstinting efforts, New Bern has one again been selected to get the Wall in 2021.
The annual Lifetime Achievement award is a recognition of Halyak's activities and is presented for outstanding individual service to other Veterans and for notable achievements while participating in beneficial community and civic organizations and activities.
