The Independence Center

Information provided by: Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments

Founded in 1987, The Independence Center (The IC), is a local nonprofit helping people with disabilities create independence by leveraging their own unique abilities. As the local home of civil rights for people with disabilities, The IC works with any individual who self-identifies as having a disability, their family, and the community to create independence so that all may thrive. The IC programming includes: Advocacy, Assistive Technology, Benefits Assistance, Healthcare at Home, Housing Voucher Assistance, Independent Living Skills, Information & Referral, Peer Support and Recreation, Transitions Skills, and the Veteran-Directed Care program. The IC’s Veteran-Directed Care (VDC) program serves eligible veterans of any age who want to remain living in their home and community. The VDC program does not require a service-related disability, has no financial eligibility requirements, and does not interfere with pension benefits. The program is funded by the Veteran’s Administration and enables Veterans to self-direct the personal care and support they receive, while maintaining independence within their own home.
