Sharpsburg VFW hosting free dinner for veterans on Nov. 11

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - 10/3/2018

Oct. 02--Veterans from across the Alle-Kiski Valley will be treated to a free dinner on Nov. 11 at the Sharpsburg VFW Post 709.

"We want to pay tribute to everyone who served," Commander Len Colaizzi said.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and a meal both catered and home-cooked will be served at 6:15 p.m. at the post, 1017 Main Street. Each veteran can bring a guest.

Some of the meal will be provided by the VFW auxiliary. Sharpsburg Mayor Matt Rudzki will be a guest speaker, as well as representatives from the Veterans Breakfast Club, a group whose mission is to support storytelling by veterans to ensure their history is not forgotten.

There are about 40 storytelling events each year where veterans are asked to share memories of their military service.

"We're trying to get young veterans involved too," Colaizzi said. "We want them to come and see who we are, what we do here."

This is the second annual dinner to commemorate Veterans Day. About 50 guests participated last year.

Post member Pat Corcoran will again set a small table with a single place-setting, one rose and a red ribbon.

The table includes an inverted glass because "they can't toast with us," Colaizzi said.

"The single rose is for the blood they may have shed," he added.

"This table occupies a place of dignity and honor," Corcoran said. "It symbolizes the fact that members are missing from our ranks, so we join together to pay humble tribute to them."

Reservations must be made by Oct. 29 by calling 412-304-9923.
