Political Notes: General election campaigns underway

Cape Cod Times - 9/7/2018

Sept. 07--HYANNIS -- The general election race for state representative in the 2nd Barnstable District is off and running.

Incumbent state Rep. William Crocker, R-Centerville, is being challenged by Democratic newcomer Paul Cusack, a former White House aide, Army Ranger and combat veteran from Osterville.

Both men were unopposed in this week's primary election.

The district includes 10 precincts in Barnstable and two precincts in Yarmouth.

Cusack on Thursday announced that he has received the endorsement of New Politics, a bipartisan Boston-based organization that supports military veterans and national service alumni who run for office.

On the weekend before the election, Gov. Charlie Baker joined Crocker to campaign door-to-door in Centerville.

----State Sen. Julian Cyr, D-Truro, has received the endorsement of three of the state's top environmental advocacy groups: the Environmental League of Massachusetts Action Fund, Massachusetts Sierra Club and Clean Water Action.

Cyr, who is seeking election to a second term, faces a challenge from Barnstable Town Councilor John Flores, a Republican, on Nov. 6.

----The Harwich Democratic Town Committee will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Harwich Community Center on Oak Street.

The topic of this month's meeting is the system of ranked voting.

----Jack Stanton, a Democratic candidate for state representative in the 5th Barnstable District, did not wait long after the polls closed Tuesday before taking a first, although civil, jab against his general election opponent.

Stanton faces incumbent Randy Hunt , R-Sandwich, who easily won his primary race against Barnstable County Commissioner Ronald Beaty Jr.

Stanton, who was unopposed in the Democratic primary, issued a news release shortly before 11 p.m. He thanked voters and then went on to say Hunt has been a dedicated servant for the past eight years "but the scores of people I've talked to over the course of this campaign are not content with the way things are."

----Be sure to save the date.

The Cape Cod Times will sponsor two candidate forums, moderated by the League of Women Voters of the Cape Cod Area, on Oct. 13 at Cape Cinema in Dennis.

Cyr and Flores, the candidates for state Senate in the Cape and Islands District, will take the stage from 10 to 10:45 a.m.

The 9th Congressional District candidates -- incumbent U.S. Rep. William Keating, D-Mass., and Republican Peter Tedeschi -- will be in the spotlight from 11 to 11:45 a.m.

----Here's what some of the region's elected officials were tweeting about after polls closed for Tuesday's primary elections.

Barnstable County Commissioner Ronald Beaty Jr. (@ronbeatyjr):

"... well, at least that is over with now. Thank God!"

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey (@maura_healey):

"I love my job. I love walking through the doors of the AG's Office every day to do the work of the People's Lawyer. I'm deeply honored to be the Democratic nominee for Attorney General & I look forward to leaving it all on the court over the next two months to earn your vote."

State Rep. Timothy Whelan, R-Brewster (@TRWhelan):

"Thank you to everyone who voted for me in yesterday's primary election. I am humbled by your support and am looking forward to the coming weeks, working hard to be your choice in November. #CapeCod #CapePoli"
