City approves veteran only parking

Gainesville Daily Register - 4/27/2018

April 26--Designated parking for veterans could soon be showing up in front of area businesses.

Gainesville City Council members have approved an initiative brought forth by Casualties of War founder Zack Brown for veterans only parking, which requires the city to install parking signs at the cost of the participants.

Brown said he reached out to City Manager Barry Sullivan about four months ago to discuss the project, which he said will only enhance the city's patriotism that's already shown through the Medal of Honor Host City Program.

"The city of Gainesville has been known for the most patriotic city," Brown said. "I was talking with Mr. (Jim) Goldsworthy. He's very adamant, and I'm very adamant about making that a reality for everybody that comes into the city."

The signs were initially just going to be at Rib Crib, one of the organization's sponsors, he said.

"But I decided to go ahead and make it into an initiative for the whole city of Gainesville," Brown said. "So hopefully we can thank our veterans by giving them parking. It's going to be a good thing, I think."

The program will not cost taxpayers, and the designated parking will not be enforced by the Gainesville Police Department, according to Sullivan.

"It's an honorary system," Sullivan said. "We won't be passing any ordinances or laws."

Brown said he is looking to roll out the program around June 1. His organization is still working with the city on some logistics on the pricing, he said.

Those interested in participating can contact Brown at 580-222-6544 or by email at zack@casualitiesofwar.org.

Casualties of War is a Gainesville-based nonprofit dedicated to ending veteran suicide.
