Surry Community honors veterans with luncheon

The Tribune - 11/13/2017

DOBSON — In honor of Veterans Day, Surry Community College held its annual Veterans Luncheon on Nov. 2 in the Grand Hall of the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture and Enology on the college’s campus in Dobson.

About 200 guests including veterans from the community and their family members attended and enjoyed a delicious meal provided by the Surry Community College Knights’ Grill. Surry Central High School (SCHS) JROTC members conducted the displaying of the flags to recognize each branch of the military as veteran Melvin Speas played each branch’s song on his mandolin.

The JROTC members also performed the folding of the flag, and SCHS chorus members wrapped up the entertainment portion of the luncheon by singing a medley of patriotic songs. Students from SCC’s Medical Assisting Student Organization (MASO) were on hand as volunteers to welcome guests and help with any needs during the event.

Surry’s Coordinator of Veteran Affairs Tammy Fletcher said, “I want the veterans in our community to know how much we do honor each of them and how proud we are for their service to this country, and I feel like this luncheon is a small way in which we make sure they do know exactly how much they mean to us.”

Veterans were welcomed to campus with banners and a flag display provided by Feed Saks Outdoors in Dobson was that erected by the college’s Faculty Senate, students and staff.

Surry Community College has been recognized as a “Military Friendly” school since 2011 by Victory Media. For more information on Surry’s Department of Veterans Affairs, contact Tammy Fletcher at 336-386-3245 or fletchert@surry.edu.
