Vet fests on Saturday
Vet Fest 2017 will be from noon to 5 p.m. and Vet Fest After Dark will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 8787, 500 VFW Road.
Vet Fest will include information from local nonprofits and service groups, information on volunteer opportunities within veteran organizations and networking opportunities and collaboration between participating organizations and attending veterans. The free event also will include barbecue, raffles and door prizes.
Vet Fest After Dark will include live entertainment from local veteran musicians. Tickets are $10 and available at the door or online at opveteran.org.

Junior League sets fundraiser
The Junior League of Austin will present its 42nd annual A Christmas Affair fundraiser from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The fundraiser, with the theme of "Haute Holiday," will be at the Palmer Events Center, 900 Barton Springs Road, and will include more than 200 merchants from across the country selling goods such as jewelry, clothing, art and specialty foods; special events, including private shopping, brunch and nightly parties; children's events and photos with Santa.
Proceeds will benefit local programs such as Coats for Kids and Food in Tummies, as well as local nonprofits.

Youth group celebrates
An Austin Energy green building sustainability celebration will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Big Brothers Big Sisters' new Bennett-Rathgeber Mentoring Center, at 4800 Manor Road.
Public tours and activities begin at 6 p.m. A presentation featuring a range of local and national sustainability speakers will begin at 7:30 p.m. and last until 8:30 p.m.
The celebration will commemorate the center's recently won Austin Energy Green Building three-star energy award. The award honors community structures that support a cleaner environment through efficient water and energy use and that provide healthy, comfortable spaces for staff, clients or residents.

LAKEWAY
Blood drive to honor coordinator
Searcy Willis, Lakeway's blood drive coordinator, will be honored for 10 years of service at the next community blood drive, from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek.
Willis' volunteer leadership contributed to Lakeway's blood drives that consistently ranked high among collecting drives in We Are Blood's service area. We Are Blood collected more than 4,000 units of blood at the 60 drives Willis coordinated over the 10 years. A ceremony for Willis will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Cake and punch will be served.
For the blood drive, donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh a minimum of 115 pounds for whole blood donation, be in good health and provide a photo ID.

Pecan Show set for Dec. 1
The Williamson County Pecan Show will begin at 9 a.m.Dec. 1 at the Williamson County extension office, 3151 SE Inner Loop.
Food entries must be brought to the office between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m.Dec. 1. Show officials will begin judging the food entries at 9 a.m.Dec. 1. The awards presentation will begin immediately after judging.
Categories include pecan bread and rolls, pecan candy, pecan cake, pecan cookies, pecan fancy nuts and savory pecan dishes.

Learn about ecosystems
The Plum Creek Watershed Partnership and city of Kyle will host a free workshop and field study on maintaining healthy riparian ecosystems beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
The workshop will be at Fire Station No. 1, 210 W. Moore St. It will include presentations in the morning and a field study in the afternoon at Steeplechase Park, 295 Hallie Drive.
Snacks and coffee will be provided, but attendees will have lunch on their own.

Santa's Ruck March on Nov. 21
Fort Hood will host the Santa's Ruck March and a Turkey Bowl from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.Nov. 21 at Fort Hood Stadium.
The event will include a walk with donated toys in backpacks to a drop-off point, followed by a flag football game with soldiers and their families. The championship game for the Turkey Bowl is expected to begin at 11:15 a.m. with the trophy presentation scheduled at approximately noon.
