BRIEF: Order bricks for delivery by Veterans Day

Daily News of Newburyport - 9/18/2017

Sept. 18--NEWBURYPORT -- The city veterans services director said orders are being taken for commemorative bricks so they can be engraved and delivered by Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

Commemorative bricks are engraved with the names of veterans and information about their military service.

Often, a family member will buy one and order an inscription such as "Lt. Joseph Smith, 1920-1995, U.S. Army, Pacific."

The bricks, which cost $100 each, are placed in the veterans park across from City Hall. Proceeds are used to improve veterans monuments in the community, such as repairing flagpoles or cleaning memorials.

Kevin Hunt, director of the Office of Veterans Services for the city, said it takes about six weeks between order and delivery. The engraving is done in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

"This has been a popular program that helps us with the upkeep of veteran sites," said Hunt, who was a Navy officer. "But timing is important if family members want this for Veterans Day."

He said bricks can be ordered by visiting his office at the Senior Community Center or by providing information in the lobby of City Hall.

The veterans services office can be reached at 978-462-2201.
