BRIEF: Army veteran arrested in shooting of Uber driver

Fort Worth Star-Telegram - 5/16/2017

May 16--DALLAS -- An Army veteran is suspected of shooting at an Uber car more than 10 times early Tuesday, with at least one bullet striking the driver, Dallas police say.

Officers arrived about 1 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 100 block of North Brookside Drive. Police said the 24-year-old Uber driver was giving someone a ride home when the passenger began talking about guns. Once at the apartments, the passenger took out his gun to show the driver.

The suspect saw the two with the gun and thought something suspicious was going on, police told CBS 11. He then took out his own gun and began firing at the car and struck the driver. The suspect performed emergency first aid on the driver until officials arrived.

The driver was taken to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. His condition was not available.

The suspect is believed to be an Army veteran possibly suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, police said. He was taken into police custody for questioning and later arrested. John Beaty, 33, faces a charge for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is being held in Dallas County Jail.
