Do you know a veteran?

Grand Rapids Herald-Review - 5/6/2017

A veteran could be your next door neighbor, a friend, the old man at the big box store, the nurse at the clinic, the person who works on your car or the teacher for one of your children. Maybe that veteran is you. Veterans are really an extraordinary person who offered some of their life's most vital years in the service of our country. During the month of May, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 60 in Grand Rapids would like every veteran to wear the hat with the war, branch of service they were in, or if you belong to a service organization. During the month of May, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 60 is asking the citizens of this great nation to make the month of May Thank a Veteran month! If you see a veteran on the street or in a store take the time to stop and shake their hand or just say Thank you for your service.

All veterans need to be told Thank You for your service to this Great Nation.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 60, American Legion Post 60 and Squadron 60 of Grand Rapids will be distributing the familiar red crepe paper Poppies on Friday May 12 to help all veterans along with their families in our community in Northern Minnesota. All donations will stay in Grand Rapids, Itasca County northern Minnesota and used only for our veterans and their families. We support the Veterans Home in Silver Bay, Veterans on the Lake, Honor Flight, and Pike for Vets, along with presents for veterans and their spouses at Christmas that are in the local nursing homes.

Please remember the meaning of the Poppy when you wear it.

The four petals represent:

Dedication

Sacrifice

Responsibility

Compassion

The red petals ... stand for the vast outpouring of blood.

The black... the mud and desolation of all battlefields.

The green of the stem and foliage... is symbolic of the forests, meadows and fields where generations of Americans have perished to make THIS LAND FREE.

The stem ... represents the courage and determination of our fallen warriors.

The assembled product... a flower... is a symbol of resurrection, which is sure to follow.

By wearing the red crepe paper Poppy you are telling every veteran including those presently serving this country and their families you remember their sacrifice and Thank You. Look for the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 60, American Legion Post 60 and Squadron 60 of Grand Rapids members on Friday May 12 at L&M, Ogles, Walmart and Super One from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
