PLYMOUTH – Ten local students have been recognized for their patriotic spirit and writing abilities in the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ annual Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy essay contests.

Nine of the 10 prize winners, including both first place winners, are students at New Testament Christian School in Cedarville.

Victoria Chiaramonte won first place in the Voice of Democracy contest, which is open to high school students.

Jessica Pierre won first place in the Patriot's Pen contest, which is open to middle school students.

Bob Davidson, coordinator of the annual essay contest, said only one student from local public schools submitted an essay for consideration this year. Kristen Barrett of Plymouth North High School earned second place for her effort.

Winners in the Voice of Democracy contest are: Victoria Chiaramonte, first; Kristen Barrett, second; Olivia Halpin, third; Erin deMacedo, fourth; and Alex Jacobs, fifth.

Winners in the Patriot’s Pen essay contest are: Jessica Pierre, first; Sarah Hayes, second; Seamus Comstock, third; Abigail Caliri, fourth; and Nicholas Thompson, fifth.

VFW Post 1822 sponsors and judges the annual contest and awards prizes to the winners.
