Planners Approve Master Plan for Veterans' Memorial Green

Voices (Woodbury, CT) - 7/27/2016

SOUTHBURY - Fifteen year-old Boy Scout Brendan Mallon, Troop 1607, appeared at the Tuesday, July 19, Planning Commission meeting and in short order, presented the Master Plan for a project designed to enhance the appearance and general ambiance of Veterans' Memorial Green, which is to the west side of the Town Campus next to the Senior Center and Parks and Rec Building.

The original suggestion was made at a selectmen's meeting last spring and everyone liked the idea. John Turk, commander, American Legion Post 147, contacted the troop to check for volunteers, and Brendan has now become the project manager, responsible for developing construction documents and construction oversight, including five new benches, two new flower boxes, a new "Park Green" sign and a lamp post sign.

Each bench will have a plaque representing a branch of the services: U.S. Army 1784; U.S. Navy 1794; U.S. Marine Corps 1798; U.S. Coast Guard 1790 and U.S. Air Force 1947. U.S. Coast Guard 1790 and Merchant Marines 1920 will share a bench. The new flower boxes will match those already in place.

This extremely professional proposal was approved unanimously.

The commission also approved lot line revisions to Lots 22, 36 and 37 in the Georges Hill Estates Subdivision.

According to the resolution, the purpose of the revision is to provide for a wider access for the future development of Lot 37, originally planned as a roadway through to Amos White Road, now intended as interior lots from Britiani Road.

The Planning Commission, by tradition, does not meet in the month of August, but with three items of new business pending it was decided to schedule a meeting on Tuesday, August 30, to hear two resubdivision applications, Lot 6RA Orchard Hill, West Purchase Road, and resubdivision Burr Farm Estates, Burr Road and Kettletown Road.

The third application, Wheels Gas Station and Convenience Store/Restaurant, 1411 Southford Rd., was accepted but deferred until the regular September 20 meeting.
