Spotlight: 'Applause!' celebrates 'America the Beautiful'

Appeal-Democrat (Marysville, CA) - 9/3/2015

Sept. 03--Celebrate America this weekend with the latest entry in the Yuba Sutter Arts "Applause!" series of concerts, "America the Beautiful."

This installment will feature selections from musical theater, such as "1776," "Newsies" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy," as well as songs about America, such as Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land."

"America the Beautiful" seemed the most appropriate for the Labor Day holiday weekend, said the production's director, Carmen Smith.

"These are all of the songs you think about when you think about patriotic music," she said.

The "Applause!" series features music from classic Broadway and musical theater shows performed revue-style at the Lee Burrows Center for the Arts in Marysville. Previous installments include "Razzle Dazzle," "Disney Delights" and "Here's to the Ladies."

Performers for "America the Beautiful" include Caitlin Larvick, Zachary Larvick, Elizabeth Hastey, Doug Zwolski, Russell Hogue and Elizabeth Whittenbury.

""What's really interesting about the show is most of the cast has served or is in the service," Smith said. "Joe Moye, our emcee, is a Navy veteran."

The second half of the show features a tribute to the branches of the military, featuring all of the themes for each.

Zwolski and Hogue, meanwhile, are both active in the community and "America the Beautiful" is both of their first attempts at performing on stage.

"It's great to see them get used to being on stage," Smith said.

The show will also feature a tribute to the Andrews Sisters, whom you may remember performed "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" and entertained troops during World War II.

The show also features a presentation by the Beale Military Quartet.

"It's a really entertaining show," Smith said. "There are plenty of songs for people who love musical theater and plenty of songs for people who love America."
