EDITORIAL: Thumbs up, thumbs down

Standard-Examiner (Ogden, UT) - 9/1/2014

Aug. 28--Thumbs up: To 92-year-old Morgan resident Keith R. Little: The World War II Navy veteran received some well-deserved medals and ribbons recently. Long overdue, they were earned during his service for our nation 71 years ago.

Thumbs down: To some raw milk that sickened dozens of Top of Utahns after consuming raw milk that had been purchased from a local dairy. Dozens were afflicted with campylobacter infection. The dairy has been cooperative in working with inspectors.

Thumbs up: To Utah students, who have scored higher on the ACT college entrance exam than the 11 other states that provided the test to everyone in the graduating class. Our state's average ACT score also increased from last year.

Thumbs down: To loneliness, which has doubled in the U.S. According to a study from the University of Chicago, we're more lonely than we were in the 1980s, despite the tech boom and social media.

Thumbs up: To Utah, which exceeded a goal stated by Gov. Gary Herbert in 2012 to create 100,000 new jobs in 1,000 days. State officials announced that 112,000 Utah jobs were created in that time period.

Thumbs down: To numbers that point to an engineering career being uncivil to women. According to a study presented to the American Psychology Association, women have 20 percent of engineering degrees but only comprise 11 percent of engineers. Also, researchers say 40 percent of graduates at top universities have quit or never begun a job in the field.
