10th Mountain Division veteran, 89, stars in national Tide commercial (VIDEO)

Watertown Daily Times (NY) - 8/30/2014

Aug. 30--A World War II veteran of the 10th Mountain Division is the star of a national commercial for Tide laundry detergent that will air starting this weekend.

Bruce Campbell, 89, who served primarily with M Company, 86th Infantry Regiment, speaks throughout the ad, titled "Honor Uniforms," and is seen at the end.

The ad shows workers representing a wide range of professions, with Mr. Campbell's monologue highlighting the pride people have in the work they do.

"I thought it was pretty damn exciting," he said about his first time seeing the final product.

Mr. Campbell said he was first contacted about the ad in February, but lost contact with producers for months.

"I thought they scrubbed the whole thing," he said in a phone call from his home in San Marino, Calif.

Mr. Campbell was brought in for final recording around the middle of August. He learned Wednesday that the commercial was approved and would run.

With friends and family hearing about the ad, Mr. Campbell said he's been flooded with calls and notes.

"It's been very rewarding," he said.

Mr. Campbell's approximately eight months of service in Italy with his mortar unit included support of division soldiers in offensives at Riva Ridge, Mount Belvedere, Po Valley and Lake Garda.

Recounting visits to those areas in 1994 and 2000, he said, "I'm surprised we were ever able to conduct war in those mountains."

Among his military honors from his service are a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

Mr. Campbell said he was proud of his service with the division, and of the opportunity to represent it, especially as the number of veterans who served with him is dwindling.

"We're hanging in there as long as we can," he said.
