Bridge dedicated to Korean War vet

April 22--HAROLD -- Family, friends, lawmakers, and many others turned out on Saturday to pay their respects, fondly remember, and honor an exceptional man at the dedication of the Leo Roberts Korean War Veteran Memorial Bridge.

Roberts was a husband, father, brother, teacher, minister, and foreman for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in Floyd County, remembered for his dedication to serving others. That dedication was perhaps exemplified best by his service in the U.S. Army in the Korean War.

Floyd County Sheriff John K. Blackburn recalled staying up late, sharing coffee and telling stories with what he called his "best friend." State House Speaker Greg Stumbo called Roberts a man who would speak his feelings and stand for his beliefs. State Sen. Johnny Ray Turner said he was grateful for Roberts' service to his country and for his enduring friendship. And Roberts' son, Steve Roberts, took the podium and remembered his father as a man whose simple purpose in life was doing good and serving the Lord.

The legislation to dedicate the bridge, at milepoint 13.6 on Route 680 near Harold, was passed unanimously by Kentucky'sGeneral Assembly. Workers from Highway District 12 were on hand to erect the dedication sign after it was unveiled.

Roberts passed away in 2002, at age 69, from injuries sustained in a car accident in Coal Run.
