Lorry Williams: A salute to veterans

Fayetteville Observer - 11/9/2019

Nov. 9--It's a simple phrase, but it carries a lot of weight: "Thank you for your service."

It's one I don't use nearly enough to thank the people I run into who have served, or who continue to serve, our country. We can never thank them enough for what they do.

But in the days ahead, we will have the opportunity to express our thanks as Fayetteville and other communities recognize Veterans Day with a number of events.

On our website, you will find profiles of four veterans who continue to give back to the community even after their military careers ended. They are not alone.

We know there are many others who also share this ingrained sense of service. And our community is better because of their contributions.

It's people like Avis Rankins, a retired Army nurse who has found a home with Habitat for Humanity.

And Kevin Murphy, who retired from the Army and is now the assistant chief at the Stoney Point Volunteer Fire Department.

Yes, it's a simple phrase, but it carries a lot of weight.

Thank you, veterans, for your service.
