Heroes to be honored at High Desert Veterans Dinner

Daily Press - 11/2/2019

Nov. 2--PHELAN -- Teacher Todd Anton said the 25th Silver Anniversary High Desert Veterans Dinner will be a night of heroes, stories and achievements during the special patriotic event at Serrano High School.

The free event, scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 6, will also include a Veterans Appreciation Concert, and San Bernardino County Schools Veterans Diploma Graduation ceremony for eligible veterans who did not have the opportunity to graduate from high school.

"This will most likely be the last graduation ceremony up here as the number of veterans eligible is becoming fewer and fewer with the passing years and sadly, of lives too," said Anton, who works at Snowline School District. "I hope that we fill the performing arts center and cheer on these graduates."

Anton added that in the future, eligible veterans who receive diplomas will be honored by the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools in San Bernardino.

An author and speaker, Anton said honoring veterans and connecting them with students has been a "labor of love" that he hopes to continue for many years.

Anton told the Daily Press that over the years, the lives of thousands of students have been affected as veteran storytellers share their experiences with students from Serrano High, Quail Valley Middle, Heritage and Pinon Mesa Middle schools.

Formerly the Tri-Community Veteran's Dinner, the event has grown from about 100 attendees to more than 1,200 each year.

All veterans and current military personnel are invited, and each attendee may bring one guest. The event is free but tickets are required.

The graduation/concert is scheduled from 4 to 5:15 p.m., and is immediately followed by dinner on Nov. 6 at Serrano High School, 9292 Sheep Creek Road.

Tickets may be obtained by calling 760-868-1466 or by visiting www.hdveteransdinner.com.

Tickets may also be picked up in Phelan at Desert Community Bank, McDonald's, Pizza Factory, VFW and Heritage School. Also, at DCB in Wrightwood, A-Tech Transmission in Hesperia and at Victorville Motors.
