Veterans career expo to have over 30 organizations

South Florida Sun Sentinel - 10/25/2019

Veterans, active military service members and their families will have the opportunity to advance their life and career goals at an upcoming free expo in South Florida.

The South Florida Veterans Expo will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the South County Civic Center, 16700 Jog Road, in Delray Beach. The event is free and open to everyone.

“Palm Beach State College is proud to host an event that supports our veterans,” said PBSC President Ava L. Parker.

“It is often difficult to navigate the system, so there certainly is value in bringing all services together to cut down on time, provide immediate assistance and learn about career paths, which all help to create a greater likelihood of success.”

Featuring more than 30 exhibitors, including employers, nonprofit organizations and government agencies, the expo will be hosted by Palm Beach State College and former state Sen. Maria Sachs. Attendees are asked to RSVP online at PalmBeachState.edu/VeteransServices/Veterans-Expo.

Exhibitors at the South Florida Veterans Expo will include 211 Palm Beach, Academy Medical, CareerSource Palm Beach County, Connected Warriors, Coral Shores Behavioral Health, Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County, Johnson and Johnson, McDonald’s Tri-County Group, Palm Beach County Gold Star Families, Paws 4 Liberty, PNC Bank, Ross Mixers, Seal Van Lines, Siegel Law Group, Tripp Electric Motors, VA Veterans Center, Wells Fargo, West Palm Beach VA Medical Center, Wounded Veterans Relief Fund, the U.S. Army, Army National Guard, Marine Corps and Navy and more.

Florida is home to the third largest veteran population in the country, with many of them living in South Florida. According to the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs, there are about 20 million veterans living in the United States, with over 1.5 million of them in Florida.

Last November, Palm Beach State College held a grand opening ceremony for its new Veterans Success Center at its Lake Worth campus. Sachs sponsored the $800,000 one-time appropriation from the Florida Legislature in 2016, which helped make the center a reality.

“We owe so much to veterans that we can never fully repay them, but what we can do is give them an opportunity to be part of the fabric of South Florida,” Sachs said.

“Many veterans come to me looking for help, so I spoke with Palm Beach State College about putting together an event and opening it up to the community. Of course, one of the greatest benefits for veterans lies in the GI Bill, which provides for education, and no place exemplifies that better than Palm Beach State.”
