The Cochlear Implant, model C122M, is an internal hearing aid consisting of a thin, needle-like electrode array and a receiver/stimulator encased in pliable Silastic. The two components are surgically implanted in the ear. The smooth, flexible, 22-channel electrode array and the receiver/stimulator assist in optimizing fine pitch percepts in the cochlea. The implant is used in conjuction with a speech processor, transmitter and microphone to offer a detailed representation of sound despite extraneous environmental noise. The receiver/stimulator is in a hermetically sealed titanium case with a ceramic insulator, a pure platinum receiver coil, and a magnet encased in a hermetically welded titanium capsule. The entire assembly, including the electrode array, is encased in a silicone elastomer capsule. POWER: Power is supplied through a 2.5 MHz. inductive link from the headset coil. DIMENSIONS: The electrode array's intracochlear section measures 0.4 to 0.6 milimeters in diameter; the extracochlear diameter measure 1.19 milimeters. The electrode measures 17 milimeters in length. The length from the reciever/stimulator to the electrode tip is 99 milimeters. The receiver/stimulator measures 47.7mm x 26mm x 7mm. WEIGHT: The receiver/stimulator weighs 7.5 grams.
